Sheppard uses molecular and glycobiology approaches to study the synthesis and function of bacterial and fungal biofilm exopolysaccharides.  His research seeks to uncover new biosynthetic pathways and host-pathogen interactions in order to develop novel therapeutic and diagnostic tools for the management of biofilm-associated infections.
